WARNING!
Popups offering to cleanup a large number of viruses are BAD NEWS. If you respond this scam will actually install a virus and you will be charged a “ransom fee” to remove it.
DO NOT CLICK ON THE UPPER RIGHT RED X TO CLOSE. They may have rigged the X to mean ACCEPT.
BEST PROCEDURE IS TO IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF COMPUTER BY HOLDING DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 7 SECONDS.
Another killer virus tells you to hit the F-1 key. If you do, you install that virus as well.
If you get infected try to run AVG to clean up. Otherwise take the computer to www.mesasos.com

There are no secrets from the Internet. Beware how much info you post about yourself.
To see what Big Brother already knows about you, go to http://www.spokeo.com/

Minutes of 18 Mar follow:
Members present were: Bob Bolter, Jim Erickson, Darlene Femright, Arlene Frolick, Marian Grider, Ed Heimiller, Bill Joynt, Bill Kautt, Sharlene Langdale, Clare Manz, Claire Morris, Dorothy Pickering, Jack Prasloski, Pat Prasloski, Joyce Wahlquist, Rex Weinreich, Peter and Stanton Rickey.

Marian Grider, our Treasurer, reported that we have 33 paid up members and a Treasury balance of $1322.

Peter showed a film clip from Microsoft that demonstrated their newest gadget, a tabletop computer that responds to fingertip touch. It is expected to come to market by Nov 2010. At $10,000 each it will probably only be suitable for bars and restaurants.
Another film clip showed the Zero-G experience, where people are taken aloft in a specially equipped transport plane and by a diving and leveling maneuver, experience momentary weightlessness. This program was originally developed to train astronauts. For a fee you can now add this to your “bucket list”.

Peter was a recent guest at the larger Apache Wells Resort Computer Club. His topic was “Best Sites for Computer Help”. These can be found at the top of this site - GET ONLINE HELP. What comes up is a listing of selected How to Tutorials, Kim Komando advice downloads, Smart Computng Magazine tech help, MesaSOS FAQ, Data Doctor advice, Wikipedia, virus info, etc. etc.

From this listing
Peter selected Belarc System Analysis for demonstration. By clicking on DOWNLOADS then FREE BELARC ADVISOR you can download and printout a Free profile of the hardware and software on your computer, together with the all-important technical numbers describing each item of hardware to aid in parts replacement. It also prints the codes and serial keys for expensive installed programs - make 2 copies.

Peter warned that personal items posted on Facebook may spread your personal details too far. Even if you set tight security, your "Friends" have loose settings and your info is splashed around as well. Some viruses are also unique to FaceBook. Best you use a pseudonym rather than your full name. Minimize details in photo captions as well.

OTHER SCAMS! Malware sites often use similar titles or typos to trick you. For example: GOGGLE instead of GOOGLE. AVG and Google try to keep you away from dangerous sites so follow their advice.
Our final Meeting of the Winter 2010 season will be held at 1:30 PM on THURSDAY, 25 March at the clubhouse. Come prepared for champagne, cake, and tomfoolery!
STANTON RICKEY, Club President
